1. My sister came in to town last night and decided we needed to go do “9/11 stuff” so we took the train down to the Brooklyn Bridge, and started wandering towards Ground Zero to check out the Tribute In Lights.

When we arrived, we discovered that the spotlights aren’t actually at Ground Zero, but a few blocks south at the entrance of the Battery Tunnel. There was some sort of huge party going on outside the police station by Ground Zero, so there was an odd mix of rowdy cops drinking from pint glasses in the middle of the street, gawkey tourists, and anti-mosque protesters that left me feeling a little gross about the whole thing.

But, as we got closer to the spotlight, the crowd thinned out a little, and you could see thousands of birds (and bats, apparently) flying in and out of the giant columns of light for miles up. It was pretty incredible.

    We got ice cream afterward.
