I think I probably learned how to ride one a little later than most kids. When I did learn, it wasn’t with much grace.</p> <p>My mom tells a story about the time she first took off my training wheels. She took me to an empty parking lot, and parked the car right in the middle. She set me up on the outside edge, and got me going. I did pretty well for a little while, but kept on a trajectory that had me doing progressively tighter loops around the car until my orbit eventually brought me crashing into its hood.</p> <p>When I was 8, I was riding my bike home from McDonalds with my parents in Excelsior, Minnesota. I remember peddling ahead of them up a big hill, then turning around and flying back down towards them. I made it halfway down the hill before a car pulled out of a business parking lot and slammed into me, sending my bike under the car and me over it. I remember laying on the sidewalk in a daze as my mom screamed and dropped my drink and sprinted towards me. I remember being mad at that moment at her for throwing my drink away.</p> <p>In college, Boulder, Colorado had a big underground “cruiser night” when everyone in the city who owned a big beach cruiser bike would dress up, get together, and bike around the city stopping at parks to drink before moving on to the bars at the end of the night. One night, I was biking home after a cruiser ride (maybe a little drunk) along the pitch-black trail next to the Boulder river that cut through town when an animal jumped out of the bushes and started chasing me after me. I peddled as fast as I could, but it was gaining on me. Eventually I hit a bump in an odd way and my chain slipped off of the gear. I jumped off my bike and lifted it up onto my shoulder and started to run, but the animal was right behind me. I turned, slammed down my bike between me and what I then saw was a big coyote and, full of alcohol and terror, roared at it.
